The Rothumba Project
Impact and Resilience through Indigenous Knowledge
The Rothumba Project exemplifies the power of community-led approaches and highlights their long-term potential for fostering sustainable social, educational, economic, cultural, and medical development. Acting as a pilot initiative, it offers a replicable model for other communities in Sierra Leone and across Sub-Saharan Africa.
With an overseeable starting capital, communities are supported to drive their own economic resilience without needing further assistance. Designed and implemented by the communities themselves, the Rothumba Project follows a three-phase plan over the course of a decade to promote locally-driven development in Rothumba and its neighboring areas, ensuring lasting and sustainable change.
The project’s broad social impact also emphasizes its academic significance, bridging practical experience with theoretical insights. To document, analyze, and refine the locally rooted, culturally appropriate methods and approaches of the Rotumba Project, the N’NINKIE Research Lab collaborates with a select group of Community Development students and lecturers.
Phase I (2022-2024) focuses on education and income-generating activities to promote basic needs and empowerment for the communities.
Phase II (2023-2026) expands into existing traditional fisheries, solar installations, and infrastructure development, fostering economic growth, and sustainability.
Phase III (2025-2032) targets medical access, housing, and hospitality infrastructure to improve long-term well-being and living conditions.
